Africa Fashion Week, New York is the epitome of the vibrancy, design, and culture of us as a people. A three day series of festivities from July 14th-16th booms in the luxurious Broad Street Ballroom in one of the epicenters of New York City. From the designers, models, press, to the vendors—it is a momentous collaborative effort that culminates a tremendous spirit of sophisticated fashion. Rich with runway shows, elaborate exhibits, and networking socials—Africa Fashion Week continues to hold true to its motto of: “Where Fashion Began.”

The bold statement that Africa Fashion Week spoke last year during its grand entrance, set the undeniable precedent for its 2011 opening.  Last year, AFWNY became a platform for young and talented designers to come forth and showcase their brilliancy and this year’s AFWNY will do the same.  Designers including but certainly not limited to: 54 Kingdoms, Cote Minou, Chianu International, and Kozby World rocked the stages and captivated the two- thousand plus audience members.

AFWNY 2011 is bound to be yet another opportunity and medium for fashion-goers to express themselves through creative means. With such a dynamic team behind the scenes, dedicated individuals like Adiat Disu, Adda Tidjani, Tori Famuyiwa, Akín Adebowale, and Jacqueline Muna Musiitwa, Esq work tirelessly to make this vision come to fruition. The highly acclaimed West African sensation, Ms. Korto Momolu will also grace the runway with her new collection; her signature handbag and jewelry line continues to captivate eyes world- wide. Momolu’s rich African roots are beautifully evident in her pieces that are catered to chic women attire and accessories. Most of us recognize Korto Momolu from the 5th season of Project Runway where she placed 1st Runner-Up. AFWNY is an amazing example of just what our Diasporic roots can birth. AFWNY 2011 is destined to be just what we are as a people—already remarkable, and increasingly so as time progresses. Always keep in mind, we are where fashion began.
