IN the fashion industry — today you're in, tomorrow you're out. With that in mind, Jamaican supermodel Jaunel McKenzie is taking no chances, and is making plans even before she hangs up her stilettos.
The leggy starlet, who hails from St Catherine, is launching a travel guide application (app) at the end of January, with fellow model Kimanee Wilson."The idea for a travel app came to me some time ago while in London. My driver told me that he had just returned from a holiday in Jamaica, but never left his hotel. I thought to myself that was not a good enough view of a destination — from within the confines of a hotel property," the 25-year-old told the Observer.
McKenzie, who jetted into the island — from her New York base, for what she described a well-needed holiday with family and friends — said following the conversation with the driver, she started bouncing the project off friend and business partner Wilson, and the idea of the travel app took root.
"We want to give the traveller that truly authentic experience ahead of visiting a destination. Not just the regular attractions, but off the beaten-path, people and places which will add to their holiday experience," she said.
According to McKenzie, the app will not only be of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, but will take in well-known international destinations, and some of the not-so-known spots she has visited during her travels.
Along with Wilson, McKenzie is exploring the possiblity of starting a line of jewellery as well as starting a clothing label.
She's also looking at acting. "I'm currently taking acting classes and was recently approached by a casting agent. I have a reading when I get back to New York, so who knows where that will take me," she said.
McKenzie first captured the eyes of Jamaicans in 2002 when, as a teenager, she won Pulse's fashion model title; has not looked back since. Vogue, Essence, Elle, GAP, Neiman Marcus, and Macy's have been among her impressive clientele, while models.com once named her the top black model in the world.
