This guy who calls himself Vybz Kartel is a real clown.He got his chances to go to Guyana and blew them.. with impunity. He has been taking deposits from promoters and then declaring that persons in Guyana want to kill him so he couldn't go. Didn't he know that before he accepted the assignment?
The last chance Kartel got to represent reggae/dancehall in Guyana was in August. However, Kartel decided that the smart thing to do was to feign illness in order to get off the Caribbean Airlines flight that was about to take off to the mainland territory where he and fellow deejay Mavado had a show. That particular show just happened to have been endorsed by the government of Guyana.
To show their disgust and send a message to the world, Guyana declared a ban on Kartel's music. The only radio station in the country, which just happens to be government-owned, declared that there is nothing positive about Kartel's music so it must not be played on air.
In his response, Kartel told Jamaica's afternoon tabloid, The Star, that he's not ever going back to Guyana and that he'd rather visit Iraq than tour Guyana. He also pointed out how popular he is in Guyana.
But this is not about Kartel's popularity or whether or not he wants to go to Guyana. This is about a country telling the world that Kartel is not welcome there and that his music is not uplifting. Guyana just stopped short of declaring Vybz Kartel persona non grata.
Any self-respecting artiste would be distressed.
