Every Sunday I attend church service at Fountain Baptist Church in Summit, New Jersey but of course that didn’t happen this Sunday. It would be much easier for me to say I’m recovering from jet lag but the truth is I had no means of waking up on time. No, I didn’t pack my alarm clock. It was not on my “To Pack” list (I was more concerned with packing the OFF! spray to keep the infamous Ghanaian mosquitoes away).
Alright where was I... OK I didn’t go to church and it rained all day so we stayed in the house until about six in the evening. When the rain eased up a bit we took a trip to the only mall in Ghana to see my cousins.
Yes, the only mall in the whole entire country of Ghana. Now guess where it is located. Well? Alright I will give you a hint: the most congested city in Ghana. Yup, Accra. Okay, now guess what it is called (No, you don’t need a hint for this).Yes, it is called Accra Mall.
Quick disclaimer: If you are from New Jersey you would not consider Accra Mall a mall because of its size. It is very small. Believe it or not but New Jersey is known for its malls (it’s listed as part of the top ten facts about NJ).
Moving along....Accra Mall is surprisingly diversified. From Shoprite to the cinema on the second floor, Accra Mall is a hot spot and I can see why. Honestly, when I heard there was a “mall” in Accra I thought it resembled the “mom & pop” shops seen at the marketplace but you know a bit more organized and a bit modernized. They even have an arcade! Yeah, I know...cool!

I’ve entered the second week of my trip and for the most part we’ve been visiting family (many of which I did not know prior or forgot about). Since the airport is in Accra we did our best to see those close to my Aunty Sarah’s house before we took a four hour bus ride to Takoradi, Ghana (I hate bus rides but I love my family so I took the trip).
In short, my family is from Takoradi. That is the town both my mother and father grew up in. Similarly to Accra, Takoradi has different sections so with that said my mother’s family house (my grandmother’s house) is in Chapel Hill. I actually went to school in Chapel Hill when I was about three years old (the school is across the street from my grandmother’s house) but that is neither here nor there.
Also in Takoradi is my father’s family. My father’s brother Uncle Johnny and his family (wife Aunty Diana & six boys/one girl) live in East Tanokrom. My Aunty Agi lives in Lagostown with my father’s mother (my grandmother Victoria) and her children Rebecca, Araba and Papa Andoh ( I am missing some people but you get the point). Pretty much everyone is within fifteen minutes of one another.

So I mentioned a lot about going to see family but I didn't emphasize the fact that my cousin Sammie likes to walk. We walked from Lagostown to E.Tanokrom to New Site! I am sure you do not know what that means but let's just say with the remorseless Ghanaian sun, I drank three huge bottles of water! And on top of that, I got blisters on my right little toe. In any event, I am staying in shape so I guess it is a win win situation (I'd still prefer to drive myself or better yet be driven).
But then it makes me think about those who don't have...I mean people who really don't have the option of being driven. People who can never picture themselves owning a car. The reality is it could be done and it was done without a car (mom & dad if you are reading this blog please don't think I'm suggesting you take my car away...I'm hypothetically speaking) but does that make someone inferior? For those who have such resources within arms reach, can you imagine yourself being stripped of such luxuries? And could you continue your day to day activities? Matter of fact, do you subconsciously look down at others who don't have (please note: these feelings do not have to be malicious)? I promise I won't judge. I am not an exception and have had similar thoughts...I mean think about it. It is so easy for me to say that in NJ we have bigger malls and in NJ I drive a car and...and..and..and..and...the list goes on...
You don't have to answer those questions right now, but as you continue to follow this blog (yes it is a command) allow my experiences to challenge your own thoughts and opinions. And if you have not experienced enough close your eyes and put yourself in my shoes. It is so easy for us to count our differences (and this extends beyond those in your family) but if you take the time to see past the immediate present (to see past yourself) you would believe me when I say "when I look at you...I see myself."

Week II is slowly but surely coming to an end and what would a visit to Takoradi be without a trip to Last Hour Beach. Luckily for us grandma Forson (my mother's mom) lives five minutes from the beach (I actually don't mind the walk especially after I finish swimming...when I am all wet. I like to dry off in the heat). If time permits I will find older pictures of my time at the beach but for now enjoy my most recent visit.
Many assert that you are the product of your environment, but I believe you should never let your environment define you..allow it to simply challenge you. There is so much room for growth. Why limit yourself to a definition?
