I’m closing my eyes and shaking my head with a frown as I write about Week III. I have no comment about this past Sunday and not attending church. I don’t even want to take credit for ironing all the church outfits the night before because we didn’t even use them. I keep telling everyone that I have lost track of time and my body will not get up unless someone wakes me up (especially with this cold I caught...I know who catches a cold in the blazing heat??...but then again this is the adventures of Wendiana Jones and anything goes). In any case, three strikes and you’re out right? So...I have next Sunday to redeem myself.
Although we did not attend church for the second Sunday in a row the day was still young. We woke up roughly around ten in the morning and quickly prepared ourselves for another four to five hour bus ride back to Accra. It has been about five days since we arrived in Takoradi with my cousin Efa and since then were joined by two other cousins (siblings) Kweku & Nana Forson (from my mother's side). After we arrived in Accra safely hugs were exchanged similarly to the day we landed in Ghana. No time was wasted... Aunty Sarah quickly prepared us dinner and then we were off to Tawale. Tawale is a beach spot. We sat at a table on the edge of the beach and ate barbeque chicken before Aunty Sarah made the girls and I get up and dance to the music blasting from the gazebo. Unfortunately I have no pictures from this experience but I will be visiting Tawale again.

Week III was a chance for me to reflect on my experiences in Ghana thus far. Since I arrived people from the states (probably you) have asked "How is everything going in Ghana?" and I've replied "Ghana is both challenging and exciting!" Ghana has been very challenging simply because I am out of my "norm." I am not living in my apartment, driving my car, using my cell phone, eating the snacks and foods in my kitchen etc. On the flip side, it has been very exciting because I am learning the ways of my culture. I am learning the "norms" (the ways) of my family. But even in my excitement, I must admit that the rocky roads and potholes here in Ghana have been much harder to overcome than I could have ever imagined.
Literally, there are many rocky roads. I remember my ride to Lashabi (another section of Accra) to see my mother's older sister Aunty Naana. My sisters and I had to take a taxi (riding in a taxi is one of the most common way of transport) and for whatever reason my cousin Sister Efa stopped a really small taxi. The tires on the taxi looked like those of my lego pieces from my childhood. With the weight of five human beings in the taxi I thought the tires were going to pop off while driving down the rocky roads (my stomach was churning).

Figuratively, I have hit many rock roads upon my arrival and stay here in Ghana. For one, I am a very independent person (or am I?). I am used to picking up my keys and running my errands without restraint. I am used to using the internet and my cell phone--expecting it to work at top quality. But no, not anymore. In order to make calls, I must by "credit." The phones here work like prepay phones. You have to continuously refill your credit in order to make calls. As for the internet, many go to internet cafes and buy time in order to browse the net. Everything is a process and processes take up time...time that we as native Americans have no patience for. Luckily for me, my Aunts house has an internet connection (it was down for over a week but now it is running again).
This week, I found myself in a pothole. I found myself stuck. With the internet down, the annoyance of having to buy credit to call friends and family, I wanted to just stay in the ditch. The most frustrating night was the night lights went out. It is very common for the lights to go out in Ghana let alone the stoppage of water in the pipes. One night I got in a taxi with my cousin Derrick (it cost me 3 cedis) to go to an internet cafe. The minute I opened the door to the cafe the lights in town went out. About five minutes after lights out (it was about 8:15PM) the guy working decided to close shop (mind you it was a 24 hours internet cafe). I asked the guy where he was going and he said he was leaving because lights went out but the guy working the overnight shift will be in by 9PM. He encrouaraged me to pray for the lights to turn back on and wait for the next guy to start his shift. With no other option, I decided to wait (even though I really just wanted to go home). With three minutes to 9PM I received a call that my older sister Lorraine Adjoa Quansah was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with malaria and food poisining...do I have to continue? You can imagine my night.
Needless to say, in the previous paragraph I mentioned that I am a very independent person, but this week proves otherwise--I am very dependent on the advancement of technology. Now for those who are too, I am not saying it is a bad thing..I'm merely stating the obvious. In short, my transition to life here or my new "norm" in Ghana has been filled with many rocky roads and potholes because of this ugly truth. The question is what do we do with this truth?
